Naturally, I am a strong proponent of prevention rather than
cure and therefore I have equipped my healthy foods arsenal with foods that
improve my immune system, which is the front-line defense against disease. I
have read widely of the foods that do that prevent even the most chronic
diseases like cancer, to the most subtle ailments like a cold and believe you
me, I have hacked the near-perfect strategy to fend of diseases. And I am
living proof of this; I do not get sick easily. The last time I went to see a
doctor was over 7 years ago, and that was long before I started eating and
living mindfully. SO I think I am in a good position to advice you on how to
avoid being sick.
1. Quit Refined Sugar
Who does not know sugar is bad?? Sugar suppresses the immune
function, among several other health risks and leads to horrible outcomes. Of
course I did not go cold turkey, I quit it gradually. The trick is to get other
whole and unrefined sources of sweetening like honey, jaggery, unrefined raw
cane sugar, stevia, maple syrup etc. It is also wise to avoid soda which also
contains huge amounts of refined sugars which wreck havoc to your immunity.
2. Exercise
There is no going around this. If you do not move around
regularly, your immune system will be weak and you will be exposed to diseases,
in the short and long term. Research has shown that exercise is very beneficial
to the immune system and you can start with something like a 10 minute walk
around the neighborhood (not treadmill unless it is snowing outside).
Personally I started with a 1 KM jog and today I run almost 4 KM every morning
and walk another 4 in the evening.
3. Spirulina
Ever since I started consuming this micro-algae I have been
feeling like superman. I run faster and think clearer but most importantly I
have been healthier than before using it, meaning my immunity has been
improved, just like the science says. You can get spirulina powder at healthy U
galleria/sarit/hilton/greenspan/yaya KES 790 per 100g satchet. To make it
palatable, add some Himalayan natural salt/Sea Salt, some cayenne pepper, fresh
lemon/lime juice and some warm water. Drink this everyday when you wake up and
say goodbye to disease. Oh it iis also a great energy booster for my morning
jog
4. Sunlight
In Kenya, we are blessed with sunlight for almost 365 days a
year. Even on the coldest day in July, you can be lucky to see some of the
shine for a few minutes. We all know vitamin D is manufactured in the body
using this natural source of energy and without it you CANNOT be healthy. Of
course modern marketing gimmicks have made people fear the sun, so that they
can buy billions’ worth of ‘sun screen’ that actually causes skin cancer. SO,
what do I use, you ask…simple, coconut oil, which is one of the most healthiest
things you will ever come across.
5. Coconut Oil
Virgin unrefined organic coconut oi is perhaps the most
healthiest things out there because of it’s versatility and availability. You
can virtually replace all cosmetics with coconut oil. Cosmetics suppress the
immune function due to the several toxins so that would be smart way to go.
Cooking with this oil also improves digestion and in turn your immune system,
remember what Hippocrates said, “all disease start in the stomach”.
6. Healthy Diet
This goes without saying, a general diet consisting of
organic green vegetables and fruit, antibiotic-free meat, beans, fish, and free
range organic poultry are good when taken in balance. Fresh juices and
smoothies are quintessential to improving your health as well as consumption of
herbs, in food or in tea form. You should also eat many seeds like amaranth,
hemp, millet, chia, sesame, quinoa instead of nutrient -void crap like white
rice, white ugali. Nowadays you can find brown ugali in the supermarkets which
they blend whole maize with stuff like amaranth, millet, or better yet do it
yourself at home.
You should drink clean sources of water; either filtered
water or spring water. You can get a good charcoal-based filter in the
supermarkets for Ksh 9000, and it used no power or anything, all mechanical.
Avoid filters that use chlorine.
